Frequently asked questions.
Answers to common setup and buying questions.
Which Austria plan is right for a short break?
For light use with accommodation Wi-Fi, compare the two short data plans: 1 GB for 7 days at €0.27 and 3 GB for 7 days at €1.82. Frequent photo uploads, video calls and hotspot use need more. For a longer holiday, pick a validity that covers your stay and enough gigabytes. The best plan is the one matched to your real use, and a one day trip still needs the 7 day minimum, since no 1 day plan is sold here.
Which networks does the Austria eSIM operate on?
Listed networks: A1 Austria, Magenta Telekom. Connects to 4G/5G where the network offers it. Speeds and signal vary with your phone, location and network conditions.
Can my phone use these plans?
Your phone must be among the compatible phones: it must support eSIM and be network unlocked. Check the exact model and the region where it was sold. On iPhone, look for Add eSIM in Cellular or Mobile Data settings and No SIM restrictions under Settings → General → About. Android and iOS paths differ; the compatibility guide links to manufacturer instructions.
When should I install the eSIM, and when does validity start?
Install over reliable Wi-Fi and keep the instructions offline. Purchase, installation and first connection are separate steps; follow the plan's activation instructions to learn when validity starts and whether a first-use deadline applies. Installation from a QR code is quick, but that's not an 'instant installation' guarantee of when the clock starts. On arrival, enable the travel line and set it for mobile data.
Is it possible to keep WhatsApp and receive banking codes?
You can use your existing WhatsApp or another messaging app over the eSIM's data connection, and YouTube or video calls will eat into the same allowance. These plans carry no Austrian phone number, ordinary calls or SMS. Bank SMS codes still need your regular line, carrier and bank to work abroad; check home-carrier charges before leaving that SIM active.
Can I tether my laptop to the eSIM?
The listed networks support hotspot. Any device you connect draws from the same data allowance. Use the data hotspot for a laptop or tablet, and tethering works the same way, but every connected device draws from the same allowance. Laptop updates, cloud backups and video meetings burn through it fast. Set automatic downloads to Wi-Fi and count every device when choosing your data amount.
Does the Austria eSIM cover a train journey through Germany?
No. These plans include Austria only. A train can cross a border even if both ends of your vacation are in Austria. Check the countries on your actual route, including Germany where relevant, and arrange separate coverage for any foreign section. Save tickets before the border.
Is the data unlimited or renewed daily?
No. Each plan holds its stated total for the full validity period. For example, 50 GB for 180 days is 50 GB shared across those days, and 30 days is not always a calendar month. It doesn't reset daily, and longer validity doesn't mean a faster connection. There's no 14-day or 2-week option, and this isn't a monthly plan; the short choices are 7 or 15 days.
Can I top up or extend the validity of my plan?
Top-up amounts, payment methods and account-credit rules are not confirmed in the plan listing, so check what's supplied before counting on a top up. Confirm whether it adds data, extends expiry or needs another eSIM. Watch your remaining data and end date; don't assume unused data rolls over or that days are added automatically. These are fixed prepaid plans, not a one month or monthly subscription with automatic renewal, and searching 'no contract' doesn't replace reading the purchase terms.
What should I check if I have no internet connection?
Check you're in Austria, the eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data, and you still have data and validity left. Apply the travel line's supplied roaming and APN settings, then try airplane mode briefly or restart. Keep the profile installed while seeking help; screenshot errors without sharing the QR code publicly.
How do I prevent charges on my regular SIM?
Set the Austria eSIM for mobile data, turn off automatic data switching and leave data roaming off on your home line. Apply any roaming setting the travel eSIM requires only to that line. Your regular carrier can still charge for calls or texts.
How do I get support or request a refund?
Keep your order reference, phone model and installation details ready when contacting support. Check the purchase conditions for refund eligibility, especially after activation or use, since refund terms are not confirmed in this preview. Adding a plan here does not place an order or collect a payment.
Using your eSIM in Austria
An Austria eSIM for city days and mountain stops
An eSIM is a virtual sim card already in your phone, so you don't swap a physical SIM. A network-unlocked, eSIM-compatible iPhone or Android can buy a prepaid Austria data plan online and get internet for hotel check-ins, rail timetables and messages to a host or visiting family. Train tickets and attraction bookings stay separate, and the plan carries no Austrian phone number. These recommendations start from your real usage, not your itinerary alone.
For a short visit with Wi-Fi at your accommodation, 1 GB for 7 days at €0.27 is the cheapest option and covers messages plus occasional maps. Planning a stay of 2 weeks means buying more headroom: there is no plan valid for 14 days, so the nearest option is 3 GB for 15 days at €1.82. Heavy users can compare the remaining options, 10 GB for 30 days at €5.61 or the 50 GB plan that runs 180 days as one fixed total. Larger plans offer better pricing per gigabyte, but affordable depends on total trip cost, and best price per gigabyte matters less than not paying for data you never use. Best value means the cheapest plan that still covers your use, not the largest one.
Check the connection before you head uphill.
Your plan uses A1 Austria, Magenta Telekom, with 4G/LTE and 5G where available. Reception and connection quality depend on your phone, buildings, network load and Alpine terrain, so features like 5G aren't guaranteed everywhere, and we won't claim best coverage. Download your walking route and return ticket in town; a larger plan doesn't extend coverage.

Up to the peaks.Salzburg, Austria
Vienna: pick the station for your next leg.
Wien Mitte and Wien Hauptbahnhof serve different onward trips. Vienna Airport lists the S7 to Wien Mitte and Railjet services to the main station. Search from Flughafen Wien to your hotel stop or next rail destination before you choose a service.
Open the current ÖBB result to check departure, platform and changes. An airport train ticket and a city transport ticket can cover different zones, so read what the fare you buy includes. Keep the booking on your phone and save the hotel entrance code for the final walk.
Save before you goYour airport-to-hotel route, the ticket and your accommodation address. Save the next train reservation separately if Vienna is only a transfer.
Salzburg: main station or the old town?
Salzburg Airport identifies bus 2 for the main railway station and bus 10 for the city centre. Match the connection to your accommodation, then check the current operating day, departure and stop. The stop for an old-town guesthouse can differ from the one you need for an onward train.
Use your data to fetch check-in details and fix a meeting point along the Salzach. If your accommodation offers a guest transport ticket, check its validity before buying another one. Save large photo uploads for Wi-Fi if you picked a small allowance.
Save before you goSave the bus route and ticket, the guesthouse entrance code and a meeting pin. Check the return airport connection against your flight date before you leave.
Innsbruck: verify each leg of the Nordkette route.
The Nordkette route links the Hungerburg funicular with the Seegrube and Hafelekar cable cars. Fetch your ticket and confirm which sections it covers before you set off. Innsbruck tourism describes the route from the old town through Hungerburg to the upper stations.
Check the operator's live operating page, seasonal closures and the last descent for each section while you still have a connection. A mountain view on a city map won't tell you whether a lift or trail is open. Save your return plan and agree a meeting point before splitting up.
Save before you goYour lift ticket, a route map and descent times for every section you plan to use. Keep battery for the return.
