Frequently asked questions.
Answers to common setup and buying questions.
What's the right Malta eSIM plan for my trip?
For a quick trip of mostly maps and messages, the 1 GB, 7 day plan starts at €0.27, and it is usually the most affordable starting point. If you want the same 3 GB to last longer, the 7, 15 or 30 day options are all €1.92. Heavy browsing, YouTube streaming or photo uploads suit 10 GB for 30 days at €5.98, and 20 GB for 30 days at €11.78 works if several devices share the hotspot. Our recommendations treat the cheapest plan as a floor, not automatically the best value, because there is no single best coverage across Malta and the best price depends on your own data use.
What networks can I connect to, and is 5G available?
Listed networks: Epic Malta, Melita Malta. Connects to 4G/5G where the network offers it. Speeds and signal vary with your phone, location and network conditions. 5G is one of the listed features, but it only appears where the local network provides it.
Is my phone compatible with this eSIM?
You need an eSIM-compatible phone that is not locked to a carrier. Check the exact model and where it was sold, not just the model family. On an iPhone running iOS, look for Add eSIM under Cellular or Mobile Data and check Carrier Lock under Settings, General, About. On Android, the steps vary by manufacturer, so follow the maker's guide. The compatibility guide links to Apple, Samsung and Google instructions.
What's the best time to install and activate the eSIM?
Install over solid Wi-Fi while you can still reach the setup steps. This is not an instant installation guarantee: the QR code still needs a compatible phone and a working connection, and installation is separate from when your validity starts. Once in Malta, enable the line and select it for mobile data, keeping the instructions saved offline.
Will WhatsApp still work, and can I get banking SMS?
Your existing WhatsApp account keeps working over the travel eSIM's internet connection. The plan has no local number and no ordinary calls or SMS, so a bank verification text still depends on your regular SIM, your home carrier and your bank. Check that carrier's charges before leaving the line enabled while abroad.
How can I tether my laptop to the eSIM?
The listed networks support hotspot. Any device you connect draws from the same data allowance. When you turn on the data hotspot, every connected device draws from the same allowance as the phone, so pause system updates, cloud backups and large downloads while tethering if you need the data to last the whole trip.
Do I need a separate eSIM for Gozo, and do I need a separate eSIM for a ferry to Italy?
Gozo is part of Malta, so no separate eSIM is needed there; the same plan works where Epic Malta or Melita Malta is available. For a ferry to Italy, yes: the offers do not include Italy and do not guarantee a signal at sea, so download tickets before boarding and buy a separate plan that names your next country.
Does the data allowance reset daily or is it unlimited?
No. Each plan is a fixed total for the whole validity period, not a daily reset, and hotspot traffic counts toward the same total. There is no 1 day option, so a one day stopover still means a 7 day plan. Pick enough days and enough data together, because unused gigabytes do not extend an expired plan.
What steps do I take if mobile data isn't working?
Check you are inside Malta, the eSIM is enabled and chosen for mobile data, and the plan still has data and days left. Apply any roaming and APN settings supplied with the plan to the travel line only, then toggle airplane mode briefly or restart. Signal quality varies with your phone and location, so try somewhere stronger if needed, keep the eSIM installed, and note your phone model, location and order reference before contacting help.
How do I prevent my home SIM from using data?
Set the Malta eSIM as your mobile data line and switch off automatic data switching, then keep data roaming off on your home SIM. Apply any roaming setting the travel eSIM needs to that line only. Calls and SMS on your regular number still follow your home carrier's terms.
Is it possible to top up or extend the plan?
If your dates or usage change, compare the listed plans again. A new allowance does not extend an existing plan or carry over its balance, so read the purchase instructions before installing a second one. For a top up or reuse of the installed profile, follow whatever options came with your order. These are fixed prepaid totals; check the purchase terms to confirm whether no contract applies before paying.
What do I need to request support or a refund?
Keep your order reference, phone model and installation details when you contact support through the help information supplied with your purchase. Refund eligibility depends on the purchase terms and whether the plan has been activated or used, so read those terms before buying and leave the profile installed while a connection issue is being looked into.
Using your Malta eSIM once you land
A Malta eSIM sized to the trip you are actually taking
A Malta eSIM card is a virtual SIM card you add to an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone by QR code. These prepaid data plans are sized for a short vacation or a family holiday: tourists pull up the airport bus, open a Valletta booking and check the Gozo ferry sailing, all while keeping their usual messaging account.
A light short stay with maps and messaging fits 1 GB for 7 days from €0.27. The 3 GB allowance is available in options for 7, 15, or 30 days, and costs €1.92. Step up to 10 GB for 30 days at €5.98 when you will browse, stream YouTube and share photos often, or 20 GB for 30 days at €11.78 if a laptop or a second phone shares the connection. There is no plan for 1 day and no plan for 14 days. A stay of about 2 weeks fits the 3 GB option for 15 days. Note that 30 days is not the same as one month, and pricing is a one-time total with no monthly subscription.
Check the ferry before you lose the shore signal
Listed networks: Epic Malta, Melita Malta. Connects to 4G/5G where the network offers it. Speeds and signal vary with your phone, location and network conditions. Save tickets and return details offline before you board or head into a sheltered bay, because Malta coverage does not guarantee a steady signal out on the water.

An island day to line up.Valletta, Malta
Valletta: pick the bus that serves your address.
Malta Public Transport runs Airport Direct buses from the terminal signposted just outside arrivals. TD4 heads to Valletta and the Gozo fast ferry, while TD2 and TD3 serve St Julian's and Sliema. Match the route to your accommodation address rather than boarding the first bus you see.
Check the operator's route page or the tallinja app online for today's departure and stop, since times vary by day. TD4 calls at Valletta B1 and Lascaris, so save the specific stop you need instead of a generic "Valletta" pin, and treat the walk to your accommodation as a separate leg.
Meeting someone after a harbour walk? Send an exact entrance or a map pin before you arrive. Set up your messaging account before the trip, because this data-only eSIM provides internet access but no Maltese phone number for ordinary calls or SMS.
Save before you goYour Airport Direct route, the accommodation entrance and a screenshot of the stop where you get off.
Gozo: plan both ends of the crossing.
Gozo Channel runs between Ċirkewwa on Malta and Mġarr on Gozo, with no seat reservations and boarding on a first-come basis. Check the sailing information before heading to the terminal, especially when your island visit has to meet a flight or another booking.
On Gozo, work out Mġarr to your stop as one journey, then the return connection as a second one, because the ferry port and your final destination are two different map pins.
Download your tickets, the port location and any pickup notes before boarding. The same Malta plan keeps working on Gozo where Epic Malta or Melita Malta is available, but do not count on continuous service during the crossing, and leave large uploads until you are ashore or on Wi-Fi.
Save before you goYour ferry details, the Mġarr meeting point and the bus or pickup plan for the return trip.
