Frequently asked questions.
Answers to common setup and buying questions.
Is my EU roaming enough for Switzerland, or should I buy an eSIM?
Check your home contract first. Switzerland sits outside the EU/EEA roaming area, so roam-like-at-home does not automatically apply there. If your carrier already covers the trip with enough data at a price you accept, you may not need an extra plan for your holiday. Otherwise, a Switzerland eSIM is a practical fallback. Check the EU guidance ↗
Does this eSIM also cover France, Italy or the rest of Europe?
These plans cover Switzerland only. France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein are not included. For a multi-country trip, compare a regional plan that names every stop against separate country data plans, using the same data, duration and total pricing. Some travellers call these virtual sim card options, so check the country list and the offers shown online before you buy.
Which phones can use this Switzerland eSIM?
You need an eSIM-capable, network-unlocked phone, and the exact model and regional variant must be supported. On an iPhone running iOS, check for Add eSIM under Settings → Cellular and for No SIM restrictions under Settings → General → About. Android menus vary by maker, so check your model's support page. Use the compatibility guide on this page for a list of compatible phones from each manufacturer. If your phone isn't supported, a physical SIM or your carrier's roaming offer may work better.
When does my eSIM start counting days, and how long does it last?
Purchase, installation, enabling the profile and the first network connection are separate steps, and 'instant installation' only describes setup, not a delivery-time guarantee. These are prepaid allowances with no contract and not a monthly subscription, so read the purchase terms before you buy. Thirty days is not the same as one month. For a trip of about 2 weeks, compare the 15-day option; it covers two weeks plus an extra day. The supplier's terms decide which step starts validity and the exact expiry time, so check your activation instructions before installing, especially if you buy the eSIM card well ahead of departure.
Can I keep using WhatsApp and receive bank codes with a data-only eSIM?
A data-only travel eSIM provides internet access, not a Swiss number, ordinary calls or SMS. An existing WhatsApp account can keep using its registered number over the data connection. Bank SMS codes still depend on your regular line, carrier and bank. Keep that line available if you need it, check any roaming charges, and save an alternative sign-in method.
Is 5G or unlimited data included in these plans?
These plans give you a fixed total MB or GB allowance for the trip, not unlimited data or a fresh allowance each day; that allowance and a set validity are the core features. Sunrise Switzerland and Salt Switzerland support 4G/LTE and 5G where available. Your phone, location and network conditions set the actual speed and quality of the connection, which can drop in buildings, railway tunnels and mountain terrain.
Can I tether my laptop or share data with family?
Yes. A data hotspot is included, so you can use tethering to share the connection with a laptop or other phones. Laptop updates, cloud backups and YouTube streams can eat a lot of data, so count every connected device in your estimate. Family or companions who plan to split up should work out how to stay connected on their own.
What if I run out of data or need a longer stay?
Check your balance and expiry through the method in your provider's instructions. Top-up availability is not confirmed in the supplied terms, so confirm it, any added validity and what happens to unused data before you rely on one. A top up may not be the same as buying a new eSIM, and an extension may not reuse the same profile. If the top-up cost is high, a replacement plan may be more affordable.
My eSIM won't connect. What should I check?
First confirm you're in the included territory, the profile is enabled and selected for mobile data, and the plan still has data and validity. Follow the provider's roaming and APN settings, then try airplane mode briefly or restart. Move to an open area if signal is weak. Keep the installed profile; don't delete or move it without provider guidance. For support, note your device model, location, order reference and screenshots, and never post your QR code publicly.
How do I keep my regular SIM from racking up charges?
Select the travel eSIM for mobile data, turn off automatic data switching and keep home-SIM data roaming off. Enable the separate roaming setting the travel eSIM needs. Your home carrier may still charge for calls and texts, so check its terms if you leave that line switched on.
Is there support, and can I get a refund?
Support service and refund conditions are not confirmed here, so check the provider's published channels and policy. Refund eligibility follows the plan's purchase and activation conditions, so review them before buying. This preview does not place an order or take payment; adding a plan here is for comparison only.
Do Zürich, Geneva or Zermatt need their own eSIM?
No. These are destinations within Switzerland, not separate country plans. Match your full itinerary to the product territory, then check the supported operator's own coverage map for the places you'll visit; for best coverage in a specific valley, verify with that operator. A country-wide plan does not guarantee reception in every building, railway tunnel or mountain valley.
Using your eSIM in Switzerland
Switzerland eSIM details
Mobile data covers maps, timetables, bookings and messages on the move. An eSIM does not replace a rail ticket, a local phone number or an offline map saved in advance.
The cheapest option, 100 MB for 7 days at €0.23, suits a few messages and booking checks with maps already downloaded; the 500 MB plan adds room for light browsing. Even a one day visit or a 1 day stopover needs a 7-day plan, since no shorter validity is listed, and a two-week stay of about 14 days fits the 15-day option. The best value and best price for you depend on real usage: with light mapping and messaging, 3 GB for 30 days at €1.60 costs less than 10 GB for 30 days at €4.91 and may be plenty, while video and laptop work tilt toward the larger allowance. These recommendations assume typical tourist use, so adjust for your own habits.
Signal fades in the mountains.
Tunnels, terrain, buildings and busy networks can all weaken reception. Download tickets, maps and your accommodation address before you set off.

may be between stops.Lauterbrunnen · Jungfrau region
Zürich: first your train,
then the tram.
Zürich Flughafen is the airport station; Zürich HB is the main city hub. Look up the full journey to your accommodation, including the last tram or bus stop.
Use SBB for the rail connection and ZVV for local zones. Confirm whether your ticket covers the onward ride, since mobile data cannot issue or validate a ticket.
Save before you goYour booking, the correct platform and stop, and your host's address. Stations and tunnels can interrupt reception.
Geneva: airport, Cornavin,
then the next leg.
Genève-Aéroport and Genève-Cornavin are two different stations. Check your platform and onward city stop in the live timetable.
Ask eligible accommodation about the Geneva Transport Card before you arrive. It covers the Unireso zone 10 network, not a trip into France. Check both the transport ticket and your data plan's country list for a border crossing.
Save before you goYour transport card, hotel address and onward booking. Don't assume a free airport-arrival ticket; check the airport's current guidance.
Interlaken is where you branch.
Check your next stop.
Check Interlaken Ost versus West. Trains toward Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen leave from Ost. Read the destination on your train and the exact boarding point on your booking.
Use the Jungfrau operator's current site for mountain tickets, pass coverage, reservations and operating conditions. A rail pass does not automatically include every mountain journey.
Save before you goYour tickets, walking map and a descent alternative. Signal and weather shift in the mountains, so keep your return plan offline.
Park at Täsch.
Continue to Zermatt.
Zermatt is car-free for ordinary visitor traffic. Park in Täsch and arrange your onward transfer. Treat parking, shuttle and mountain-lift costs as separate items.
Use mobile data to coordinate with your accommodation and check lift operations. Going to Cervinia via the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing means entering Italy, so confirm the international ticket, the weather and Italian data coverage.
Save before you goYour parking location, transfer details, tickets and return route. Don't rely on continuous reception at altitude.
